Cindy Chan Kai Yee is the founding president of CODA Hong Kong, which was establised in 2013. She was born in Hong Kong. Both of her parents are deaf. She is fluent in Hong Kong Sign Language and spoken Cantonese. Cindy is now studying Business Management, with the hope of improving the management and structure of CODA HK. As a CODA herself, she has experienced first hand the challenge faced by many other CODAs in navigating both Deaf and hearing world. She began acting as a language broker for her parents at a very young age, taking charge of much of the family duty as a young child. The Hong Kong government places little emphasis on deaf education. Hong Kong Sign Language has never been given an official status. The development of intellectual, physical and emotional health and the self-esteem of CODAs have suffered as a result.
